Tourism in Puno
TOUR TO THE UROS - TAQUILE FLOATING ISLANDS ONE
DAY 20 minutes from the city
of Puno by boat. The inhabitants of these
islands have organized themselves as the Uros-Chulluni
Community and although they still hunt and fish,
they manage tourist directed activities in their
territory. Their livelihood is based on the
benefits of a unique plant The Totora reed. They
use it to build their homes, boats and even the
floating islands they live on, periodically
adding new layers of reeds. Totora reed is a
source of food for man and animals, a refuge for
their hunting quarry and a vital tool for
everyday activity. About 35 km
( 4 hours ) from the city of Puno by boat, this
island is unique because They are farmers,
fishermen and weavers. Taquile is 6 km to 7 km
long and has several Hills and many
archeological ruins. Perhaps the most
interesting aspect of the people of Taquile is
their solid sense of community, all the people
offer rooms and board to visitors in their owns
homes.
